2008 Smoky Mountains trip |

The Troop had a great time in the Smokies this July. The weather was (mostly) great and the campsite was fantastic. In two hikes (one to Andrews Bald and the other to Hen Wallow Falls), we covered about 8 miles over tough terrain. The boys did an excellent job on the trail and made the trips with ease. We saw a lot of great scenery and even a snake or two. Much to the disappointment of the Scouts (and the relief of the Scoutmaster), we did not run into any bears during the trip. We also took a leisurely inner tube float trip and as an exciting raft ride down the Upper PIgeon River. Not everyone knew what to expect on the ride, but by the end everyone was ready to do it again! One of the boys got chucked out of the raft after an impact with a rock (a common occurrence), but he and his fellow Scouts remembered their training and got him back into the boat in short order. Troop rummage sale results |
the sales for our rummage sale totaled a whopping $2606.95! We had a great turnout and lots of good deals were made. The money will be put to a lot of good use making sure we have the equipment we need and, more importantly, we'll do some great stuff!
Speaking of the rummage sale, we all owe a great big thanks to Mrs. Herdegen for her hard work and time. We could not have gotten everything done without her. Many thanks also to all of the parents, relatives and siblings who also helped along the way; their assistance was invaluable and very much appreciated. |

Good times at Pounds Hollow |

We had a great turn out at Pounds Hollow Lake, and the boys had a great time! There was a little rain in the area, but we didn't let it stop us. The Scouts (and a couple of tagalongs) set up camp on Saturday, then went on a 4+ mile hike past the lake and around Rim Rock. The hike included a couple of very steep inclines, but the Scouts never faltered. They did a great job. After the hike the boys cooked supper and then worked through a night-time navigation exercise provided by Mr. Herdegen and Mr. Mayo. A few campfire stories and quiet time, and then it was off to bed! The next day we broke camp and then made the short drive to Garden of the Gods, where the boys took a short hike into the heights to enjoy the view. After that we headed home, tired but happy. |
